What to do in the first 24 hours after losing your pet

Losing a pet is frightening, but the actions you take in the first day make the biggest difference. Stay calm and work through these steps.

1. Search close to home first

Most lost pets are found near where they went missing. Walk your immediate area slowly, calling your pet's name in a calm, familiar voice. Bring treats, a favourite toy, and a leash or carrier.

2. Alert your community right away

Speed matters. Create a lost report on Save Your Best Friend so people nearby are notified immediately — the more eyes looking, the better. Include a clear, recent photo and your pet's last known location.

3. Contact local shelters and clinics

Call (and where possible, visit) nearby animal shelters, rescues, and veterinary clinics. Leave a description and your contact details, and ask how often you should check back.

4. Check microchip and ID details

If your pet is microchipped, confirm your contact information is current with the registry. A found pet with up-to-date details is reunited far faster.

5. Keep the search going

Don't lose hope after day one. Refresh your report, thank everyone helping, and keep checking shelters. Many pets are reunited days — even weeks — later thanks to a persistent, connected community.
